Bridge over C&D Canal at Chesapeake City

Welcome to Chesapeake City
Note:
Chesapeake City was the starting point of the original Chesapeake Country Road. When I began this project it was natural for me to do a piece on Chesapeake City as one of my “Points of Interest” series on the ChesaDel Crier. This was originally published there on April 9, 2021.

In 1829, after years of planning and construction the C&D Canal connecting the Delaware Bay with the Chesapeake Bay opened. The town that grew around the locks, Chesapeake City, was named in 1839 and soon expanded to both sides of the canal. The town was incorporated in 1849. It was a commercial community that serviced the passengers and shippers who used the canal. The town was named Chesapeake City in 1839 and soon expanded to both sides of the canal.

On the southern side of the canal many of Chesapeake City’s 19th-century architecture remains intact, and the area has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s a little town full of charm and is a nice place to spend time walking the streets visiting the shops or eating at the town’s restaurants or just daydreaming on the water while huge ships pass before your eyes.

On the North side of the the Canal Maryland’s Ben Cardin C&D Canal Recreational Trail begins. The trail links to Delaware’s Michael Castle Trail and runs along the north bank of the canal to Delaware City.

I am bringing this post to the front because one of my photographic goals for 2025 is to do a Monthly Photo-essay of the towns on the Maryland  Eastern Shore, Chesapeake Country.  Since Chesapeake City is considered the Northern most point of the nationally designated Chesapeake Country Scenic Byway All American Road  by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Chesapeake City is a natural starting point. The photos in this piece are from 2021 or before, I’m way overdue to take a photographic trip to Chesapeake City. Look for the photos from that trip sometime in the upcoming weeks.

If you are wondering whether you can get a print of one of myphotographs. You sure can. Three sizes are available. 8×10 (with 11×14 Matt) at $25, 11×14 at $50 or 13×19 at $75. However, if you would like another size, I’m sure I can get one to you. Just send an email to photos@shoretobefun.com if you are interested in purchasing or have any questions.
