The Town of Rock Hall in Kent County Maryland is located on the Chesapeake Bay. The town has a long life as a Bay town. Founded in 1707 over its life it has been a shipping point for tobacco, seafood and other agricultural products, a passenger transport connection for travelers during the Colonial era. Later, fishing and seafood processing became the town’s largest industry.
To honor the Watermen, a life that once flourish in the town but now is a dim shimmer, a bronze statue was created by Kenneth Herlihy and is of Captain Stanley Vanant who was an oysterman and boat builder. The oysterman is shown bent over his oyster tongs with many sun bleached oyster shells scattered at his feet. The statue reminds us of days gone by and serves as a tribute to the watermen of the Chesapeake Bay.
Today Rock Hall is a place that people visit for recreation on the bay. On the Weekend of August 11-13 the town held their 16th Pirates and Wenches Weekend. This was on Saturday morning when dingys came to the harbor for a a little fun before the Poker Run part of the day’s event.
