Harriet Tubman Visitor's Center

Harriet Tubman Visitor's Center
In a way you can think of this week’s entry being a preview to a drive. In March of 2020, just days before the Covid Shutdown, I attended a Harriet Tubman Day Celebration at the Tubman Visitor’s Center in Dorchester County. There will be a Celebration of Tubman’s 200th birth on the weekend of March 12th and I plan to journey there.

On Saturday March 7, 2020 I attended at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitor Center located in Dorchester County their annual celebration for Harriet Tubman. The center has many exhibits that feature information about Tubman’s childhood and young adulthood, living and laboring under slavery. (Below are a few photos from that day.

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Dorchester County, MD. Her birth date is unknown although believed to be in 1822. She died o n March 10, 1913. It is on this date that her birth will be celebrated

As an escaped slaves she continued to return to slave states on thirteen missions to rescue approximately seventy enslaved families and friends. During the civil war she worked for the union army to rescue more slaves. She has become an icon of American courage and freedom.

About Drives With Steve

Nearly three years ago I began doing a series of posts I called “Drives with Steve” on my photography Website, SGAtkinson.com. The idea was to take a drive from my home in Chestertown to an randomly selected location and take photographs along the way.

This eventually turned into the “Point of Interest” Series. Along the way I’ve captured a pretty wide range of photos that I could put into the Photo Book that I am currently producing.

This year I am planning to do more “Drives” and post them here for your viewing pleasure. Check back each Sunday to see a reposting of one of my previous “Drives” or a new one.

These photographs are available as a print. Three sizes are available. 8×10 (with 11×14 Matt) at $25, 11×14 at $50 or 13×19 at $75. Please send an email to photos@shoretobefun.com if you are interested in purchasing.
