I have often told folks going to the beaches that they should take the short detour off of US50 to visit Wye Mills.

Wye Oak State Park consists of 29 acres, much of which protects the stream valley behind the park from development was designed to protect The Wye Oak, Maryland’s honorary state tree, which was the largest white oak tree in the United States and the State Tree of Maryland from 1941 until was destroyed on a June 6, 2002 by a severe thunderstorm. A clone of the old tree stands in its current location.

An 1 1/2 story brick structure dating back to colonial times that was once used as a one-room schoolhouse is next to the Wye Oak. The school house is thought to be the second oldest schoo in Talbot County and was restored by The Queen Anne Garden Club in 1952. They affectionately called it the “Little House,”

The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
