Shortly after Queen Anne’s County was organized in 1706, Queenstown became the County Seat in 1707. It was first called Queen Anne’s Town, then in 1710 Queen’s Town and later simply Queenstown. The town and the County was named after England’s Queen Anne.

The Court House was built in 1708. In 1782 the County seat was moved to Centreville. The frame structure dates to 1708. The brick section was added between 1820 and 1840 and not used as a Court House since its construction came after Centreville became the county seat.

Since 1782 the building had served as a home, warehouse, drug store, grocery store, restaurant, beer parlor, post office, and an antique shop. In 1977 the town bought the property with the restored Court House opening taking place on May 5, 1979.

Queenstown - War of 1812 Marker & Clock
Queenstown is the only town in Queen Anne’s County to be attacked by the British during the War of 1812. The attack, which occurred in August 1813, is one of locations on Maryland’s Eastern Shore portion of the Star Spangled Banner Trail.

Queenstown's Civil War Trail Marker
Queesnstown is also a location on the Civil War Trail. The History Marker inscription includes “In 1863, the recruitment of blacks for the United States Colored Troops began in Queen Anne’s County at Queenstown and Kent Island.”

About Drives With Steve

Nearly three years ago I began doing a series of posts I called “Drives with Steve” on my photography Website, SGAtkinson.com. The idea was to take a drive from my home in Chestertown to an randomly selected location and take photographs along the way.

This eventually turned into the “Point of Interest” Series. Along the way I’ve captured a pretty wide range of photos. Check back each Sunday to see photos from a latest Drive. Although due to weather or other circumstances some may be of previous drives.

If you are wondering whether you can get a print of one of myphotographs. You sure can. Three sizes are available. 8×10 (with 11×14 Matt) at $25, 11×14 at $50 or 13×19 at $75. However, if you would like another size, I’m sure I can get one to you. Just send an email to photos@shoretobefun.com if you are interested in purchasing or have any questions.

You can support this project and see additional photos if many of these “Drives” at Patreon.com/ShoreToBeFun.
