” Captain Lambert Wickes
One of senior officers of Continental Navy in opening years of Revolutionary War. Noted for his daring raids on British shipping. In his Sloop of War Reprisal he took Benjamin Franklin to France in 1776. Was first American Naval Officer in European waters after Declaration of Independence. Born near here on Eastern Neck Island, c 1735. He was lost with his ship in storm off Newfoundland October 1, 1777. Franklin called him “a gallant officer, and a very worthy man.”
The marker is in Rock Hall, Kent County, Maryland at the intersection of Maryland Route 20 and Main Street (Maryland Route 445.

Along the roads in Maryland there are roadside historical markers. Hundreds on Maryland Eastern Shore. The program was launched in 1933 and is currently administered by the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) in cooperation with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA).These roadside historical markers are an effective way to draw attention to the many events, people and places that have contributed to the history of Maryland and the nation.
Often we will pass these signs at a speed that makes them hard to read. I will be posting one of these Highway Historical Markers each Tuesday Morning. Please come by to read read them and learn a little about the remarkable people, places and events throughout the region.

I am a direct descendant of Captain Lambert Wickes. And was raised in Chestertown in The Wickes Home/Apartments for some 33 years…117 Water Street.
Captain Lambert Wickes Sloop of War was name “Reprisal”. He was commissioned by The Continental Congress to sail Benjamin Franklin to France 🇫🇷.
