A vibrant mew mural was dedicated on August 13, 2022 in Downtown Cambridge. The Dorchester Women’s Mural featuring a dozen women from the past and present that have made a difference in Dorchester County and far beyond was dedicated on August 13, 2022.

A few weeks ago I had a few minutes and made an attempt to find and photograph the mural. I wasn’t sure of its location and my time ran out before I found it. This past Friday, I decided to stop in Cambridge to take some photos of the new statue of Harriet Tubman at the County Court House. A block or so before the Court House I looked to my right and there was the mural. Ironically I had walked past it on that earlier day.

The 12 women featured are: Yogananda Pittman, former Acting Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police; Civil Rights activist Gloria Richardson; Admiral Sara A. Joyner, the first female carrier strike fighter squadron leader; Anna Ella Carroll, advisor to President Lincoln; Bea Arthur, actress of stage, screen and television; champion sharpshooter Annie Oakley, social activist Harriet Tubman; Mayor Victoria Jackson-Stanley, the first woman and first African American mayor of Cambridge; Dr. Lida Orem Meredith, the first woman doctor in Dorchester County; Fronnie Jones, matriarch of a legendary 60-year, multi-generational crab picking family at J.M. Clayton’s; Donna Wolf Mother Abbott, the first woman Chief of the Nause Waiwash tribe, and Dakota Abbott Flowers, six-time champion muskrat skinner.

The mural was created this summer by Baltimore-based artist Bridget Cimino – who was selected among 17 applications.

About the Sunday (Which may be closer to a Monday) Posts

Nearly three years ago I began doing a series of posts I called “Drives with Steve” on my photography Website, SGAtkinson.com. The idea was to take a drive from my home in Chestertown to an randomly selected location and take photographs along the way.

This eventually turned into the “Points of Interest” series. Along the way I’ve captured a pretty wide range of photos.

For the past several months I have been doing posts on each Sunday that I have been terming,”Drives with Steve” and have tried to have recent one every week. Over these past few there has been a few things that have made these weekly trips difficult to do. One of the biggest has been, in a word, inflation. Especially the price of gas. The cost for these trips have nearly doubled.

I have decided to only do one “Drives with Steve” post a month, on the first Sunday of the Month. What will be appearing on the other Sundays?

“Points of Interest” on the Second Sunday, “Common Series” on the Third Sunday and “Over the Years on the Fourth Sunday.

My Thanks goes out to all who are constant visitors. I am grateful for all of the support I am receiving.
